Ideas for Grandparent’s Day

What a wonderful day to celebrate all the grandparents. But not every student has a grandparent. In that case, celebrate a special person in the child’s life, like a godparent, aunt, or parent. These ideas can be changed to accommodate all the students in your classroom.

Graham Crackers for Grandparent’s Day. The student and their grandparent will be able to decorate and assemble four ingredients for their crackers.

  1. Vanilla Frosting with sprinkles
  2. Peanut Butter or Nut Butter with apple chunks
  3. Whipped Cream with Strawberry Chunks
  4. Peanut Butter or Nut Butter with honey

If you want to add something to your Math Center for this special day, ask each grandparent and student which cracker was their favorite.

Dramatic Play- Dress like Grandma or Grandpa. Have your students dress up like their grandma or grandpa. You can do it on the day of the celebration or the day before.

I have also provided a few books that I think your students will enjoy.

Abuela, By Arthur Dorros-Age Range: 3 – 8

Rosalba and her grandmother (Abuela) take an extraordinary trip over Manhattan Island using Rosalba’s imagination. They soar over the trees, pass the Statue of Liberty, and sit on clouds to relax.  The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful.

Hooray for Grandparent’s Day, By Nancy Carlson-Age Range: 3 – 8

Arnie doesn’t like Grandparents Day because he has no Grandparents. Then he finds that he has not only grandparents but also four sets of them.  Grandparents can be friends, neighbors or community helpers, and Arnie had a lot of people who could be his grandparents for a day. I like this book because the illustrator chose to use animals instead of people, which makes it relatable to everyone, especially those students who don’t have grandparents.

My Day with Grandma, By Reesa Shayne– Age range 2-6

My Day with Grandma is a beautiful book about all the fun that a little boy has with his grandmother. The relationship between the two is terrific.

I hope you enjoyed these ideas! Will you be celebrating Grandparents Day in your classroom this year?
